Aashish Somaiyaa is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of WhiteOak Capital Asset Management Limited, the mutual fund arm of the WhiteOak Capital Group founded by Prashant Khemka, a former Goldman Sachs Asset Management India fund manager. Somaiyaa joined WhiteOak Capital AMC in 2021, having previously served as CEO of Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company for more than a decade. He is known for his deep understanding of the Indian mutual fund distribution ecosystem, his investor education contributions, and his emphasis on transparent communication about investment process and performance attribution.

Career history

Early career

Somaiyaa began his career in Indian financial services, gaining early experience in sales, marketing, and distribution within the mutual fund industry. His formative professional years were spent understanding the Indian financial advisor and distributor ecosystem, the network of independent financial advisors (IFAs), national distributors, bank wealth management desks, and regional brokers that form the backbone of mutual fund distribution in India beyond the direct plan channel.

Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company

Somaiyaa joined Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company (MOAMC) and served as its CEO for an extended period, over a decade, during which he built the AMC from a small fund house with a distinct quality investing identity into a more substantial franchise. Motilal Oswal AMC is known for its “Buy Right : Sit Tight” investment philosophy, emphasising the identification of quality businesses with long growth runways and the discipline to hold them over extended periods without excessive trading.

Under Somaiyaa, MOAMC grew its AUM significantly, expanded its scheme range (adding passive and international funds to a primarily active equity-focused range), and developed a strong reputation for performance consistency and investor communication. The AMC’s flagship funds, including Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund and Motilal Oswal Flexi Cap Fund, built strong long-term performance records during his tenure.

WhiteOak Capital AMC (2021–present)

Somaiyaa joined WhiteOak Capital AMC as MD and CEO in 2021, following his departure from Motilal Oswal AMC. WhiteOak Capital is a relatively recently established fund house that had been operating as a PMS and AIF manager before obtaining SEBI’s mutual fund licence. The fund house is built around the investment philosophy of founder Prashant Khemka, who developed a quality-GARP (Growth at a Reasonable Price) framework during his Goldman Sachs India fund management career.

Somaiyaa’s role at WhiteOak is to build the mutual fund business, distribution, brand, investor communication, compliance, and operations, while the investment function is led by Khemka and the portfolio management team.

Leadership approach and philosophy

Somaiyaa is known for emphasising the importance of matching investors to the right investment product rather than simply selling the highest-return recent performer. He has been a consistent advocate for understanding investor risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial goals before making fund recommendations. His public communication frequently addresses behavioural aspects of investing, the challenge of maintaining commitment to a good investment process through periods of relative underperformance.
