Career history

Early career and Sundaram AMC

Radhakrishnan began his career in equity research and investment management at Sundaram Mutual Fund, the asset management subsidiary of the Sundaram Group, a prominent South Indian financial and automotive conglomerate. At Sundaram AMC, he developed expertise in equity analysis within the Chennai-based investment community and managed equity funds with a growth-oriented approach. His tenure at Sundaram AMC built his reputation as a quality-growth investor with particular expertise in Indian consumer, technology, and healthcare sectors.

Franklin Templeton Asset Management India

Radhakrishnan joined Franklin Templeton Asset Management India and rose to the position of Chief Investment Officer for Equities. Franklin Templeton India has a complex history in the Indian mutual fund market: the firm built a large and respected equity franchise, including Franklin India Prima Fund (a mid-cap offering) and Franklin India Flexi Cap Fund, that delivered strong long-term performance over many years.

Franklin Templeton India went through a highly significant and disruptive episode in April 2020, when its Indian fixed income team, separately managed from the equity division, wound up six debt mutual fund schemes due to severe liquidity stress in the lower-rated corporate bond universe, following the COVID-19 lockdown and associated credit market freeze. This event, which affected approximately Rs 28,000 crore of investor assets, was one of the most discussed regulatory and operational events in Indian mutual fund history. The equity operations of Franklin Templeton India, including Radhakrishnan’s equity management responsibilities, were not directly affected by the debt fund wind-up, though the reputational impact on the firm was significant and led to investor redemptions across both the equity and remaining debt product lines.

Radhakrishnan has continued to manage the equity investment operations of Franklin Templeton India through this challenging period, maintaining the equity investment philosophy and rebuilding investor confidence in the firm’s equity capabilities.

Investment philosophy

Radhakrishnan’s investment approach is documented in fund manager letters and media commentary:

Quality growth orientation. His core philosophy is to invest in businesses with strong competitive positions, capable and trustworthy management teams, and the ability to grow earnings at above-average rates over long time horizons.

Long-term holding. He has emphasised holding well-chosen businesses over multi-year periods rather than trading on near-term catalysts, allowing compounding to work within the portfolio.

Sector expertise. Radhakrishnan has developed particular expertise in the consumer, healthcare, and technology sectors of the Indian economy, where structural growth tailwinds and the emergence of quality franchises have provided long-term investment opportunities.

Public engagement

Radhakrishnan is a regular media commentator in Mint, Economic Times, Business Standard, and television channels. He has participated in AMFI events and investment conferences. His commentary is characterised by a measured, data-driven style with a focus on long-term business quality themes. He has spoken at industry forums in both Chennai and Mumbai, reflecting the dual-city nature of Franklin Templeton India’s operations.
