Bandhan Mutual Fund is an Indian asset management company, the successor to IDFC Mutual Fund following the acquisition of IDFC Asset Management Company Limited by Bandhan Financial Holdings Limited (the parent entity of Bandhan Bank Limited) in 2022. The rebranding from IDFC Mutual Fund to Bandhan Mutual Fund was completed in 2023. As of March 2024, the fund house managed assets exceeding Rs 1.3 lakh crore across equity, debt, hybrid, and passive categories.

For the history of the IDFC Mutual Fund entity prior to the acquisition, see IDFC Mutual Fund (historical).

Bandhan Bank, the sponsor parent, was founded in 2015 as India’s first microfinance-origin bank to receive a universal banking licence from the Reserve Bank of India. Its entry into mutual fund sponsorship through the IDFC AMC acquisition represented a significant strategic expansion into mainstream financial services.

History

Bandhan’s acquisition of IDFC AMC (2021–2023)

IDFC Limited, the infrastructure finance company that had sponsored IDFC Mutual Fund, announced the sale of IDFC AMC in 2021 as part of a broader corporate reorganisation. Bandhan Financial Holdings emerged as the acquirer, completing the transaction following SEBI, CCI, and RBI approvals in 2022.

The acquisition price was approximately Rs 4,500 crore for the AMC entity. Post-acquisition, IDFC AMC was renamed Bandhan AMC, and a phased rebranding of the fund house’s schemes commenced. The IDFC brand on schemes was progressively replaced by the Bandhan brand through 2023.

Scheme continuity and management team

The investment management team that had operated under IDFC Mutual Fund largely continued under the Bandhan banner. Vishal Kapoor, who had served as CEO of IDFC AMC, continued in the same role through the transition period before subsequent management changes were made.

The sponsor is Bandhan Financial Holdings Limited, which controls Bandhan Bank. Bandhan Bank holds 100% of Bandhan AMC through its financial holding structure.

Key service providers:

  • Registrar and Transfer Agent: Computer Age Management Services (CAMS)
  • Custodian: Deutsche Bank AG, India
  • Depository: NSDL and CDSL

Scheme portfolio

The scheme portfolio inherited from IDFC MF and rebranded covers:

Equity schemes

  • Bandhan Flexi Cap Fund: Flagship equity scheme.
  • Bandhan Midcap Fund: Mid cap mandate.
  • Bandhan Small Cap Fund: Small cap exposure.
  • Bandhan Large Cap Fund: Large cap offering.
  • Bandhan ELSS Tax Saver Fund: Tax-saving equity fund.
  • Bandhan Core Equity Fund (formerly IDFC Core Equity): Large and mid cap strategy.

Debt schemes

Full debt category coverage with significant institutional AUM in liquid, short duration, and government securities funds. IDFC MF had a particularly strong fixed income franchise built under CIO Suyash Choudhary (who subsequently departed).

Hybrid and passive schemes

Balanced advantage, aggressive hybrid, arbitrage, and a growing range of index funds and ETFs.

Investment philosophy

Bandhan MF’s equity investment process is fundamental and bottom-up. The fixed income team historically emphasised duration management and active rate calls alongside credit assessment. Post-transition, the fund house has communicated continuity in investment process while integrating with the Bandhan Group’s broader strategic vision.

Distribution and operations

Bandhan Bank’s branch network (approximately 6,000 banking outlets across India, concentrated in eastern India and smaller towns) provides a potentially large retail distribution footprint. The alignment of Bandhan’s microfinance-origin customer base with mutual fund distribution is a strategic thesis that the fund house is working to develop.

Regulatory standing

Bandhan Asset Management Company Limited holds a valid SEBI registration. The acquisition and rebranding were effected with full regulatory clearances.
