DSP Mutual Fund is an Indian asset management company, formally incorporated as DSP Investment Managers Private Limited, and sponsored and wholly owned by the DSP Group, the Mumbai-based financial services and investment group founded by Hemendra Kothari. As of March 2024, DSP Mutual Fund managed assets exceeding Rs 1.4 lakh crore across equity, debt, hybrid, and passive categories. The fund house is the successor to DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund following the DSP Group’s buyout of BlackRock’s 40% stake in 2018. A detailed history of the BlackRock joint venture era is in the DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund (historical) article.

DSP Mutual Fund is notable for its longstanding equity franchise, particularly the DSP Midcap Fund and DSP Flexi Cap Fund, and for its stated commitment to index and evidence-based investing. Following the buyout, the fund house has expanded its passive product range and developed a strong communication brand around long-term equity wealth creation.

History and corporate structure

Origins: DSP Merrill Lynch Mutual Fund (1997–2008)

The DSP mutual fund business began in 1997 as a joint venture between the DSP Group and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers. DSP Merrill Lynch Mutual Fund was registered with SEBI and launched a range of equity and balanced fund schemes. The DSP Group’s existing position in equity broking and investment banking provided distribution infrastructure.

DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund (2008–2018)

When Merrill Lynch’s asset management division was acquired by BlackRock Inc. in 2009 (as part of BlackRock’s absorption of Barclays Global Investors and other entities), the Indian joint venture stake passed to BlackRock. The fund house was renamed DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund. During the BlackRock partnership, the AMC benefited from BlackRock’s global risk management systems (Aladdin), research capabilities, and international investment process standards.

For the detailed history of this period, see DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund (historical).

Buyout and rebranding (2018–present)

In 2018, the DSP Group exercised its option to acquire BlackRock’s 40% stake in the AMC, paying approximately Rs 1,000 crore for the stake. The buyout made DSP Investment Managers Private Limited a wholly owned subsidiary of the DSP Group. BlackRock exited the Indian domestic AMC business but has continued to have a relationship through its separate iShares ETF business in India.

Following the buyout, the fund house was rebranded as DSP Mutual Fund. Kalpen Parekh, who had been associated with the fund house for over a decade, continued as President and later CEO. The AMC articulated a renewed commitment to investor education, transparent communication, and expanding its passive product range.

DSP Investment Managers Private Limited is wholly owned by the DSP Group through DSP HMK Holdings Private Limited. Hemendra Kothari, the patriarch of the DSP Group, is the ultimate sponsor family. The trustee entity is DSP Trustee Private Limited.

Investment philosophy

DSP Mutual Fund’s active equity investment process employs sector-specialist analysts and fundamental bottom-up stock selection. The fund house has been a vocal proponent of index investing for investors unwilling or unable to identify superior active managers, while simultaneously managing active funds where the team believes it has a research edge.

Following the 2018 buyout, DSP has invested in communicating its investment philosophy through investor-facing podcasts, white papers, and founder-family statements emphasising long-term wealth creation, patience through market cycles, and cost-consciousness. This communication posture has differentiated the fund house in an increasingly crowded market.

Distribution and operations

DSP Mutual Fund distributes through the full range of industry channels. The fund house does not have a captive bank distribution channel (unlike bank-sponsored AMCs), and has historically cultivated relationships with independent financial advisers, national distributors, and digital direct-plan platforms. The investor portal (dspim.com) and third-party platforms including Zerodha Coin are active direct-plan channels.

Regulatory standing

DSP Investment Managers Private Limited holds a valid SEBI registration as an AMC. The fund house has not faced material SEBI enforcement actions as of 2024. The transition from BlackRock joint venture to wholly owned DSP Group subsidiary was effected with SEBI regulatory clearance.
