Index versus index derivative

An index itself is a calculated number, not a tradable security. The marketwatch row shows the live index level. To trade an index, you need an index derivative (futures or options on Nifty / BankNifty / FinNifty / MidcapNifty / Sensex).

For Sensex, futures and options trade on BSE under the SENSEX ticker. For most retail flows, Nifty 50 and BankNifty options on NSE remain the dominant derivative venues.

India VIX

India VIX is the implied volatility index based on Nifty 50 option prices. It is added to the marketwatch like any other index. India VIX itself is non-tradable on Indian exchanges (there is no futures or options product on VIX).
