Step-by-step procedure
Four steps per the procedure infobox.
NYSE FANG+ index
The index is much more concentrated than the broader Nasdaq 100:
- 10 constituents (vs Nasdaq 100’s 100).
- Equal-weighted at rebalance.
- Heavy concentration in mega-cap tech / consumer internet.
This is a higher-beta, more concentrated bet than Nasdaq 100 exposure.
Feeder structure
Like other Indian-listed international ETFs, MAFANG operates via:
- Indian-domiciled ETF (Mirae Asset MF).
- Underlying investment in NYSE FANG+ ETF (US-listed) or direct constituents.
- Mirae Asset manages the feeder operationally.
Why MAFANG vs Nasdaq 100
| MAFANG (FANG+) | Nasdaq 100 (e.g., Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100) |
|---|---|
| 10 constituents | 100 constituents |
| Equal-weighted | Market-cap-weighted |
| Pure tech / internet focus | Broader (includes healthcare, consumer goods) |
| Higher concentration risk | More diversified |
| Higher volatility | Lower volatility |
For concentrated US tech bet, MAFANG. For broader tech exposure, Nasdaq 100 ETF.
Tax treatment
International ETFs taxed as debt funds (Section 50AA):
- All capital gains at slab rates.
- No STCG / LTCG distinction.
For complex tax situations involving MAFANG positions, consult a Chartered Accountant before filing.
SEBI overseas-investment limit
When SEBI’s overseas-investment limit is reached, new subscriptions to MAFANG (and other international ETFs) may be paused. Check current status before placing a large buy.
Liquidity
MAFANG liquidity has historically been reasonable but variable:
- Tighter spreads when US market is active (around 19:00 IST).
- Wider spreads outside.
- Less liquid than NIFTYBEES or Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100.
Use limit orders for larger positions.
Settlement
T+1.
Premium / discount
MAFANG can trade at premium / discount to underlying NAV due to:
- Time-zone mismatch.
- Liquidity premium when popular.
- Subscription limits creating scarcity.
The premium has occasionally been substantial (5%+) during periods of high demand.
