How-to Kite Shortcut Order window

How to fix B/S shortcuts not opening the order window on Kite

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~3 min.

The B / S keyboard shortcuts on Kite web open the order window with one keystroke when focus is on a marketwatch row. When they stop working, the cause is almost always focus, extension interference, or a stale app build.

Step-by-step procedure

Six steps per the procedure infobox. The notes below cover the focus model and known extension conflicts.

How keyboard focus works on Kite

Kite web’s keyboard shortcuts operate on the focused marketwatch row. The row is focused when you click on it; it stays focused until you click somewhere else (a chart, a panel, a button).

Visible stateWhat it means
Row highlighted with a borderRow has keyboard focus; B / S shortcuts will work
Row not highlightedFocus is elsewhere; shortcuts will not register on this row
Search field active (cursor blinking)Focus is on the search field; B and S are interpreted as letters in the search

If the search field has focus, press Esc first to release it, then click the row.

Browser extensions known to intercept

Several common browser extensions intercept single-letter keystrokes and prevent them from reaching the page:

  • Vimium / Vimium-FF: B = back button by default; rebind or pause on kite.zerodha.com.
  • Surfingkeys: Similar key-grab behaviour.
  • Aggressive password managers (LastPass, 1Password) on specific page templates: rare, but observed when the order popover is treated as a form by the extension.

To test if an extension is the cause, open Kite in an incognito / private window (most extensions are disabled by default) and try the shortcut.

Kite app (mobile) does not have B / S keyboard shortcuts

The Kite mobile app does not have keyboard shortcuts. The equivalent on mobile is tap-on-row, which opens the quote screen with Buy / Sell buttons at the bottom.
