How to fix a failed SIP debit (mutual fund)
A failed SIP debit is operationally common and rarely catastrophic, but understanding why it happened and preventing recurrence matters. The fix depends on identifying the root cause.

Step-by-step procedure
See the procedure infobox above.
Common failure reasons by frequency
| Reason | Frequency | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| NSF (Insufficient Funds) | Most common | Maintain SIP amount + buffer; revisit SIP date |
| Mandate expired | Common | Register fresh mandate |
| Mandate cancelled | Less common | Re-register; verify intent |
| Mandate ceiling exceeded | Step-up SIP hits ceiling | Raise mandate ceiling |
| Bank account closed | Rare | Update bank; register fresh mandate |
| KYC issue | Periodic | Resolve KYC (see how-to-fix-kyc-on-hold-mf) |
| AMC operational error | Rare | Raise support ticket |
NSF impact
When NACH debit fails for NSF:
- Bank charges NSF fee (typically Rs 250-500).
- Platform notification of failure.
- AMC may add a charge (varies).
- Many AMCs don’t auto-retry; installment is just skipped.
- 3 consecutive failures may auto-cancel the mandate (bank-specific).
Preventing recurrence
| Strategy | How |
|---|---|
| Buffer balance | Keep 1.5x SIP amount in account on debit date |
| Calendar reminder | Reminder 3 days before SIP date |
| Match SIP date to salary | Schedule 5-7 days after salary credit |
| Use UPI Auto-Pay | Sometimes more lenient than NACH |
| Multiple bank accounts | Backup mandate option |
Impact on goal tracking
One missed SIP installment over a 20-year goal is statistically insignificant. Don’t over-react. However:
- Pattern of frequent misses indicates cash-flow planning issue; address.
- ELSS SIP miss in March may forfeit Section 80C deduction for that FY.
- Sectoral / closed-ended fund miss may not be recoverable.
For most retail equity / hybrid SIPs, single miss is fine; make up via one-off lump-sum if you want.
Retry by AMC
Few AMCs auto-retry failed NACH debits:
- Some retry within 24-48 hours.
- Most skip the installment.
- Manual one-off purchase is the standard remedy.
UPI Auto-Pay is more transparent: each failure produces immediate notification; you can retry manually.
