How to fix a failed PAN verification during Zerodha account opening

A Zerodha account application will not move past the identity stage until the permanent account number clears verification. Zerodha checks the PAN you enter against the Income Tax Department database in real time through the KYC Registration Agency network. When that check returns an error, the sign-up stalls at the PAN step and no fee, eKYC, or e-sign step opens until it is resolved. This guide covers the three documented causes of the failure, a name or date-of-birth mismatch with the Income Tax record, an inoperative PAN, and a PAN that is not linked to Aadhaar, and the exact sequence to clear each one.

This guide is for an applicant who is mid-way through opening a Zerodha account and has hit the PAN error, not for someone deciding where to open an account. The steps draw on Zerodha’s own support documentation as of 19 June 2026.

Step-by-step procedure

The numbered Procedure infobox near the top of this page lists the five operational steps in order. The subsections below expand each one with the underlying rule and the exact place to act.

1. Check the name and date of birth against the Income Tax database

The single most common cause is that the name or date of birth you typed does not match what the Income Tax Department holds. The printed PAN card is not the authority here; the Income Tax Department record is. The two can differ, and Zerodha matches against the department record fetched through the KYC Registration Agency .

To read the authoritative record, log in to incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal, click your name in the top corner, then click My Profile. The name and date of birth shown there are what verification compares against. Type them on the Zerodha sign-up in the same order as the record. Zerodha’s documented rule is that the name “cannot be entered in abbreviated form”, so a record reading “Suresh Sharath” must be entered in full and not as “Suresh S”. A single dropped middle name or a swapped first and last name is enough to fail the check.

2. Confirm the PAN is operative and linked to Aadhaar

A PAN that has gone inoperative will fail verification even when the name and date of birth are correct. Under Income Tax rules, a PAN that is not linked to Aadhaar by the notified deadline becomes inoperative, and an inoperative PAN cannot be used to open a securities account. This is a distinct cause from a name mismatch and needs a different fix.

Check the linking status at incometax.gov.in, under Quick Links, Link Aadhaar Status. If it shows as not linked, complete the PAN-Aadhaar linking before you retry. Linking after the original deadline carries a Rs 1,000 statutory fee paid through the e-filing portal, and the PAN can take up to 30 days to become operative again after the request is logged. Plan for that lag; the Zerodha verification will keep failing until the department marks the PAN operative.

3. Correct the mismatched detail at the source

Where the mismatch is on the Zerodha side, the fix is to re-enter the name and date of birth on signup.zerodha.com so they match the Income Tax record exactly, in the same order, with no abbreviation. That alone clears most failures.

Where the Income Tax record itself is wrong, for example an old spelling or a wrong date of birth carried from the original PAN application, Zerodha’s documented advice is to “contact the ITD to update the records in their systems.” A PAN correction is filed through Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) at the tin-nsdl correction service or through UTIITSL, with supporting proof. The corrected record can take several working days to propagate, after which the Zerodha check will pass.

Why the mismatch happens

PAN records carry the name as it was entered on the original PAN application, sometimes decades ago. A marriage, a legal name change, or a data-entry abbreviation at issue time can leave the card and the department record out of step with the name you use today. The Zerodha bank-proof and address-proof checks later in the flow compare against the same PAN name, so resolving the mismatch now also prevents a downstream hold. A name difference traced to marriage is resolved later in the application by uploading a marriage certificate; a wider mismatch may need a self-declaration or an affidavit, which is handled at the document stage rather than the PAN step.

4. Re-attempt the verification

Once the name and date of birth match and the PAN is operative, return to the PAN step on signup.zerodha.com and submit again. The verification path runs across three systems, the Income Tax Department, the KRA, and Zerodha’s own back end, so a failure can also be a transient maintenance issue on any of them rather than a data problem on your side. Zerodha’s documented guidance for that case is to “retry after some time.” If the first retry after a correction does not pass, wait a few hours and try once more before treating it as a hard failure.

Note one separate error that looks similar but is not a verification failure: “Account already exists with this PAN for a different client code.” Zerodha allows only one account per PAN, so this message means an account already exists on that PAN. The remedy there is to recover the existing account, not to re-verify.

5. Raise a support ticket if it still fails

If the name and date of birth match the Income Tax record, the PAN is operative and Aadhaar-linked, and verification still fails across more than one retry, the problem is on the back end and needs Zerodha to look at it. Create a ticket at support.zerodha.com using Create a ticket, then Continue, and include the PAN, the registered mobile number, and a screenshot of the exact error text. A back-office ticket lets Zerodha re-trigger the KRA check or escalate to the depository. Do not open a second sign-up on the same PAN while the ticket is open, since the one-account-per-PAN rule will block it and complicate the resolution.

Time, cost, and the rectification window

Re-verification itself is free and takes a few minutes once the inputs are correct. The only cost arises if you must link PAN with Aadhaar, which carries the Rs 1,000 statutory late fee; that fee is paid to the Income Tax Department, not to Zerodha. Keep the broader timeline in view: if PAN verification was the only blocker, the account opens within about 48 hours of a clean submission, but an ITD correction or an Aadhaar-linking request can add several working days. If the application as a whole is later rejected or held, Zerodha provides a rectification window of 3 to 15 days depending on KYC status, after which the application resets.
