How-to PAN linkage old folio

How to link an old mutual fund folio to your PAN

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~4 min.

Linking an old mutual fund folio to your PAN is necessary when pre-PAN era folios (pre-2006 typically) don’t appear in your current CAS. The AMC verifies identity and updates the folio record. After linkage, the folio is fully integrated into the PAN-driven KYC and CAS systems.

Step-by-step procedure

See the procedure infobox above.

Why pre-PAN folios exist

PAN-based KYC became mandatory for MF folios in the mid-2000s. Before that:

  • Folios could be opened with limited KYC.
  • Identity not always linked to PAN.
  • Some folios used voter ID / passport as primary ID.
  • These folios are valid; just not PAN-linked.

When linkage is required

SituationLinkage needed?
Pre-2006 folio not in current CASYes
Folio in old name (pre-marriage)Yes; KYC change first
Folio with old addressYes; address update + linkage
Already in CAS with current PANNo, already linked

Documents commonly required

  • PAN card copy (self-attested).
  • Identity proof (Aadhaar / passport / voter ID).
  • Address proof.
  • Old folio details (folio number, AMC).
  • Signed request letter to AMC.
  • Bank statement showing the AMC name (if helpful).

Resolution path for mismatches

Different bankBank mandate update; not blocking

Use MITRA for orphan folios

If you don’t remember old folio details:

  • MITRA (Mutual fund Investor Tracing and Retrieval Assistance) is a joint CAMS+KFin service.
  • Submit PAN + identity proof; MITRA searches for unclaimed / orphan folios under your name.
  • Useful for “I think I invested somewhere in 2003 but don’t recall details.”

Post-linkage benefits

  • Folio appears in CAS.
  • Capital gains automatically computed.
  • Redemption / switch operations enabled via standard channels.
  • Family inheritance / transmission becomes straightforward.
