How to recover a forgotten Kite user ID on Zerodha

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~5 min. Level: Beginner.

The Kite login screen requires a Zerodha client ID (also called user ID) rather than a username or email address. The client ID is a 6-character alphanumeric code assigned at account opening (e.g., AB1234). Forgetting this ID is common, especially among infrequent traders.

Recovering the client ID does not require password access and can be done in several ways, most of which take under a minute.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the email address registered with your Zerodha account, or
  • The mobile number registered with Zerodha, or
  • Your PAN number.

Step 1: Search your email for the Zerodha account opening email

Open the email application for the address you used when opening your Zerodha account. Search for “Zerodha” or “client ID” or “account is ready.”

The account activation email from Zerodha contains:

  • Your client ID in the subject line or the email body (e.g., “Your Zerodha Client ID is AB1234”).
  • A link to log in to Kite.

If you cannot find the account opening email, search for any daily contract note from Zerodha (sent after every trading day on which you traded). The contract note subject typically reads “Contract Note, [client ID], [date].”

Step 2: Check recent Zerodha statements or contract notes

Zerodha Console sends the following communications to your registered email, each of which contains your client ID:

  • Daily contract notes (sent after each trading day).
  • Monthly account statements.
  • Ledger statements.
  • Annual Profit and Loss (P&L) reports.
  • IPO allotment confirmations.

Search your inbox for any of these documents and locate your client ID in the header.

Step 3: Log in to Console on a device with an active session

If you are currently logged in to Console on any browser (desktop or mobile), even if the Kite password is forgotten, you can find your client ID there.

  1. Open console.zerodha.com in the browser where you have an active session.
  2. Navigate to Account (in the left sidebar) > Personal details.
  3. The client ID is displayed at the top of the profile information.

Console login uses the same client ID and password as Kite. If you are not logged in to Console either, proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: Use the Zerodha client ID lookup via PAN

Zerodha’s support portal provides a self-service client ID retrieval using your PAN and registered mobile number:

  1. Visit support.zerodha.com.
  2. Look for the option Forgot client ID or navigate to the account management section.
  3. Enter your PAN number.
  4. Enter the mobile number registered with Zerodha.
  5. An OTP is sent to the registered mobile. Enter the OTP.
  6. Your client ID is displayed on screen or sent via SMS.

This method works even without email access, provided you have the registered mobile number.

Step 5: Contact Zerodha support directly

If none of the above methods work (email not accessible, mobile number changed, PAN not available), contact Zerodha support:

  1. Visit support.zerodha.com and raise a ticket under Account > Forgot client ID.
  2. Provide identifying information: your full name, PAN, date of birth, and the email address used during account opening.
  3. Zerodha’s support team verifies your identity and provides the client ID within 1 to 2 business days.

What can go wrong

PAN-based lookup fails. The PAN must match exactly the PAN submitted during account opening. A minor entry error (for example, mixing up a letter and number, ‘O’ vs ‘0’) causes a mismatch. Double-check the PAN on your PAN card.

Registered mobile number is no longer active. If the mobile number you registered with Zerodha is no longer in service, the SMS OTP for the PAN-based lookup will not arrive. In this case, you must contact Zerodha support directly (Step 5) and request an identity verification process to retrieve the client ID.

Multiple Zerodha accounts under the same PAN. SEBI regulations prohibit multiple trading accounts under the same PAN with the same broker. If you believe you have a duplicate account issue, clarify this with Zerodha support.

Escalation path

For client ID recovery, Zerodha support at support.zerodha.com is the primary contact. If support is not responsive within 2 business days, escalate to the Zerodha grievance redressal mechanism.
