How to remove a bank account on Zerodha
Zerodha allows up to three bank accounts to be linked to a single trading account. If you need to free up a slot for a new account, or if you have closed a bank account that was linked to Zerodha, you can remove a secondary bank account through Zerodha Console. The primary bank account cannot be removed directly; you must first change it to a different account and then remove the old primary (which becomes a secondary after the change). This guide covers the complete removal procedure, pre-removal checks, and the downstream effects on eMandates and fund additions.

Prerequisites
Before following this guide, confirm that:
- The account you wish to remove is a secondary account, not the primary account. The primary account cannot be removed. If you want to remove the current primary account, first change a different account to be the primary. See How to change your primary bank account on Zerodha.
- You have checked for active eMandates, SIP registrations, or margin funding instructions tied to the account being removed. All such instructions should be cancelled or migrated before the removal.
- Any pending NEFT/RTGS/IMPS transfers from the account being removed are not in transit. If a transfer from this bank is in flight at the time of removal, the funds will still be credited to your trading account (the account removal affects future additions, not in-transit ones), but verify the credit on Console after removal.
- The bank account to be removed has no pending refund or reversal from Zerodha’s side. Check the Console ledger for any credit entries marked as “Pending” that reference this bank.
Step-by-step procedure
Step 1: Log in to Zerodha Console
Open console.zerodha.com in a browser. Log in with your Zerodha client ID and password, then complete two-factor authentication via TOTP or SMS OTP. Bank account management is available only through Console, not through Kite.
Step 2: Navigate to Account > Bank accounts
After logging in, click Account in the top navigation menu. Select Bank accounts from the dropdown. The Bank accounts page lists all accounts linked to your trading account, showing:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Bank name | Name of the bank |
| Account number | Partially masked account number |
| Account type | Savings or Current |
| Status | Primary or Secondary |
| Actions | Options available for each account |
Step 3: Locate the account to remove
Identify the secondary account you wish to remove. Confirm that its status is Secondary, not Primary. If it is marked Primary, you cannot remove it until a different account is promoted to primary.
Step 4: Check for active eMandates
Before proceeding, navigate to Account > eMandates (or the equivalent section on Console) to check whether any active eMandate references the account you plan to remove. Common eMandate uses at Zerodha include:
- Mutual fund SIP mandates via Zerodha Coin
- UPI eMandate for margin or fund top-ups
- Net-banking eMandate for recurring transactions
If any active eMandate references the account, cancel it first. See How to cancel an eMandate on Zerodha. After cancellation, return to the Bank accounts page to proceed.
Step 5: Click Remove or Delete
On the Bank accounts page, locate the Remove or Delete option (often shown as a dustbin icon or a text link) next to the secondary account you wish to remove. Click it. A confirmation dialogue appears.
Step 6: Confirm the removal
Read the confirmation message carefully. It typically states the bank name and last four digits of the account number. Click Confirm, Yes, remove, or the equivalent affirmative option. Zerodha processes the removal. For secondary accounts, this is typically instantaneous.
Step 7: Verify removal
Refresh the Bank accounts page. The account you removed should no longer appear in the list. If it still appears, wait 5 minutes and refresh again. If it persists, contact Zerodha support at support.zerodha.com.
After the removal
Re-adding the same account. Zerodha may impose a cooling-off period of approximately 30 days before the same bank account number can be re-added. This measure is a security safeguard against rapid account churn. If you accidentally removed an account you needed, contact Zerodha support to request early re-addition.
Pending fund additions. If a NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS transfer was initiated from the removed account before the removal and has not yet been credited to your trading account, the credit should still arrive. The registration check occurs at the point of deposit, not at the time of transfer initiation from your bank. Monitor the Console ledger and contact Zerodha support with the UTR if the credit is delayed.
UPI deposits. If the removed account was the primary bank (after a primary bank change has been completed), UPI deposits from any handle previously linked to that account will be rejected. Update your UPI application to link a new handle to the current primary bank.
What can go wrong
Remove button greyed out or absent. This indicates the account is the primary account and cannot be removed directly. Change the primary account to a different bank first, then return to remove the old one.
eMandate error after removal. If you removed a bank account without cancelling a linked eMandate first, the eMandate may be marked as Failed or Cancelled at the bank’s end upon the next debit attempt. You will need to re-register the eMandate with the new primary or secondary bank. See How to set up a UPI eMandate on Zerodha or How to set up a net-banking eMandate on Zerodha.
Account still visible after removal. If the account appears with a Pending removal status rather than disappearing from the list, it may be under an ongoing verification or has an unresolved pending transaction. Contact Zerodha support.
