How to request a duplicate contract note from Zerodha
A contract note is a legally mandated document issued by a stock broker to its clients for every trade executed on a stock exchange. Under SEBI regulations, a contract note must be issued within 24 hours of trade execution. It is the primary legal evidence of a trade between the broker and the client, and it is a critical document for:
- Capital gains tax computation (acquisition cost, sale proceeds, STT paid)
- GST input credit (for business traders)
- Responding to income tax department queries or notices
- Dispute resolution with the broker or exchange
Zerodha issues contract notes digitally (by email to the registered email address and via Console download). This guide explains how to access historical contract notes if the original email was missed, the inbox was lost, or the contract note is needed for tax or legal purposes.
Method 1: Self-service download from Zerodha Console
This is the fastest method and covers the majority of use cases.
Step 1: Log in to Console
Open Zerodha Console and log in with your Client ID, password, and 2FA.
Step 2: Navigate to Reports > Contract notes
In Console, find the Reports section in the navigation menu. Under Reports, click Contract notes (labelled as “Contract notes” or “Tradebook” depending on the current Console version).
Step 3: Select date range and exchange
Use the date picker to select the trading date for which you need the contract note. Select the relevant exchange (NSE, BSE) and segment (equity, F&O, currency, commodity).
Step 4: Download the PDF
For each trading day that has trades, a contract note is generated. Click Download to save the PDF to your computer.
The digital contract note from Console is the official document. It contains all legally required fields:
- Trade date and settlement date
- Exchange name and segment
- Security name and ISIN
- Buy/sell indicator
- Quantity and price
- Brokerage, exchange transaction charges, STT, GST, and other levies
- Net payable / receivable amount
- Zerodha’s SEBI registration number and digital signature
Method 2: Support ticket for older or unavailable records
If the contract note is not available on Console (due to records older than the Console’s online history window, or a technical issue), raise a support request.
Step 1: Raise a ticket at support.zerodha.com
- Log in to support.zerodha.com using the registered email address.
- Category: Reports > Contract notes.
- In the ticket body, specify:
- Client ID
- Trading date(s) for which contract notes are required
- Exchange (NSE / BSE) and segment (equity / F&O / currency / commodity)
- Reason for the request (e.g., “Required for income tax return filing for FY 2021-22”)
Zerodha typically responds within 1–3 business days by emailing the contract notes or by providing a download link in the ticket response.
Step 2: For physical / signed contract notes
If the purpose requires a physically signed contract note (rare; some legal or court proceedings may specify this), mention it in the ticket. Zerodha charges a fee for generating and couriering physically signed contract notes (the current fee is stated on the Zerodha support website). Physical contract notes are dispatched by post within 5–7 business days.
Alternative: Tax P&L report and tradebook
For income tax filing purposes, the Tax P&L report from Console is often more useful than individual contract notes. The Tax P&L report aggregates all trades for a financial year and presents the capital gains, turnover, and STT details in a format suitable for filing.
Access it via Console > Reports > Tax P&L. Select the financial year. The Tax P&L report can also be downloaded in a format accepted by most tax filing software.
The Tradebook (Console > Reports > Tradebook) provides a comprehensive list of all trades during a selected period, without the per-day contract note structure.
Contract notes for closed or inactive accounts
If the Zerodha account has been closed, contract note access via Console is no longer available. To obtain contract notes for a closed account:
- Contact Zerodha support at support@zerodha.com with the former Client ID and the specific trade dates.
- Zerodha is required to maintain records for 5 years; they can retrieve and email contract notes for closed accounts within this period.
- Provide identity verification (PAN, former registered email) to authenticate the request.
