How-to KYC KRA name update

How to update name on mutual fund KYC (KRA)

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~6 min.

Updating the name on your mutual fund KYC at the KRA is typically required after marriage, a legal deed poll name change, or a PAN database correction. The process requires updating PAN first because the KRA validates KYC name against the PAN database; a mismatch causes rejection.

Step-by-step procedure

See the procedure infobox above for the canonical sequence.

Why PAN must be updated first

The KRA’s KYC validation runs:

  1. Compare KCRF name field to PAN database name (via NSDL/UTIITSL PAN verification API).
  2. If mismatched, reject the modification request and mark “PAN mismatch.”

You cannot bypass this. Update PAN at the Income Tax e-Filing portal using Form 49A correction.

  • Marriage: Marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriages.
  • Deed poll: Notarised deed poll declaring name change.
  • Gazette notification: Government Gazette publication of name change (often required for legal recognition).

Online vs offline

Most KRAs do not support online name change (because of the document verification requirement). The offline KCRF form route is the standard procedure.

Folio-level corrections

Some older folios (pre-KRA era) may retain the old name even after KRA update. Identify these via Consolidated Account Statement . For each affected folio, file a name correction request with the relevant AMC.
