How-to KYC KRA signature update

How to update signature on mutual fund KYC (KRA)

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~6 min.

Updating the signature on your mutual fund KYC is required after a change in signing style (handwriting evolution over years), legal name change (where signature changes too), or after the original signature was lost / disputed. The update requires bank attestation because signature verification is the primary anti-fraud control for offline redemptions.

Step-by-step procedure

See the procedure infobox above for the canonical sequence.

Why bank attestation

The KRA cannot independently verify your new signature against any database (unlike PAN name, which cross-checks against the PAN database). The bank serves as the verifier: your bank has a registered specimen signature, so when the bank attests the new specimen, it confirms identity continuity.

Folio-level vs KRA-level

The KRA holds the master KYC record. New folios opened after the update use the new signature automatically. Existing folios may retain the old signature in the AMC’s records; for these, a separate folio-level signature update is required at the AMC.

To identify affected folios, run a Consolidated Account Statement and file folio-level updates with the AMCs holding those folios.

When signature update is critical

  • Before a planned large redemption: To avoid signature-mismatch rejection on the redemption form.
  • After a successful fraud attempt: To invalidate any forged signature attempts.
  • Marriage / name change: New legal name typically means new signature style.
  • After legal incapacity restoration: Following a power-of-attorney revocation.
