LIC Mutual Fund is an Indian asset management company, formally incorporated as LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited, sponsored by Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). LIC is the Government of India-owned life insurance giant and one of India’s largest institutional investors. LIC Mutual Fund was established in 1989 as one of the public sector bank and insurance company-sponsored AMCs that entered the market after the government opened the sector beyond the Unit Trust of India in 1987.

As of March 2024, LIC Mutual Fund managed assets of approximately Rs 25,000–30,000 crore. The fund house’s AUM base is modest relative to its sponsor’s institutional scale, reflecting limited aggressive distribution investment and competition from better-resourced private sector AMCs.

History and corporate structure

LIC Mutual Fund was established in 1989, two years after the government opened the sector to public sector banks and insurance entities. LIC’s agent network, with approximately 1.3 million agents, is theoretically one of the largest distribution channels in Indian financial services. However, the mutual fund subsidiary has not been a primary focus of LIC’s distribution efforts, which have naturally concentrated on insurance products.

The fund house was originally structured as the LIC of India Unit Scheme before being reorganised as a conventional SEBI-registered mutual fund. It has operated under various management structures and has not undergone the kind of joint venture formation or foreign partner acquisition that characterised many contemporaneous AMCs.

LIC itself listed on National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange in May 2022 in India’s largest IPO to date (Rs 20,557 crore raised). The listing enhanced corporate governance oversight of LIC’s subsidiaries including the AMC.

Scheme portfolio

LIC Mutual Fund offers a standard range:

  • LIC MF Large Cap Fund, LIC MF Flexi Cap Fund, LIC MF Midcap Fund: Core equity offerings.
  • LIC MF ELSS Tax Saver Fund: Tax-saving equity.
  • LIC MF Liquid Fund, LIC MF Short Duration Fund: Debt coverage.
  • LIC MF Index Fund – Nifty 50 Plan and Sensex Plan: Passive equity.
  • LIC MF Balanced Advantage Fund: Dynamic asset allocation hybrid.

Investment philosophy

LIC MF’s investment process is fundamental and research-driven. The fund house has not developed a strong differentiated investment identity, operating more as a standard diversified AMC without a particular stylistic edge.

Distribution and operations

LIC agents can distribute LIC Mutual Fund products as AMFI-registered distributors. The fund house also distributes through independent advisers and digital platforms.

Regulatory standing

LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited holds a valid SEBI registration. No material enforcement actions as of 2024.
