Career history
Pre-HDFC AMC career
Barve worked in Indian financial services prior to the establishment of HDFC AMC, developing experience in investment management and financial markets. His background and network within the Indian banking and financial services sector positioned him to lead the asset management joint venture that the HDFC Group and Standard Life Investments (of the United Kingdom) established in 1999.
Founding and leadership of HDFC AMC (1999–2021)
HDFC Asset Management Company was incorporated in 1999 as a joint venture between Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited (HDFC) and Standard Life Investments (later abrdn). Barve was appointed as Managing Director and CEO at inception and led the organisation through its entire formative and growth phase.
Under Barve’s leadership, HDFC AMC established a large-cap equity franchise anchored by Chief Investment Officer Prashant Jain, whose long tenure managing flagship schemes such as HDFC Equity Fund and HDFC Top 100 Fund was a central feature of the AMC’s investment identity. Barve was responsible for the overall business strategy, distribution, client relationships, and operational management of the AMC while the investment function was led by Jain and the wider investment team.
HDFC AMC completed a widely publicised initial public offering (IPO) in July 2018, listing on BSE and NSE. The IPO was one of the most successful in the Indian financial services sector at the time, reflecting investor appetite for a profitable, growing asset management business. At the time of its IPO, HDFC AMC was managing approximately Rs 3 lakh crore in AUM, placing it among the top two fund houses in India.
Barve retired from HDFC AMC in January 2021 after more than two decades of leadership.
Legacy
Barve’s long tenure at HDFC AMC is credited with establishing the institutional culture, distribution relationships, and investment discipline that enabled the AMC to compete successfully against both public sector incumbents (UTI, SBI) and private-sector competitors. He is regarded as one of the key institution builders in the Indian mutual fund industry’s post-liberalisation era.
