MTF ledger entries

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~2 min.

MTF ledger entries in Zerodha Console show the financial movements of MTF positions, including buy, daily interest accrual, sell, and interest payments. Understanding the entries helps with reconciliation and tax computation.

Typical entries

For an MTF buy:

  • “MTF buy: [Scrip] [Quantity] @ [Price]” - the trade execution.
  • “MTF margin: [Amount]” - the user’s contribution.
  • “MTF loan: [Amount]” - the broker-funded portion.

For daily interest:

  • “Interest charged on MTF: [Amount]” - daily debit.

For an MTF sell:

  • “MTF sell: [Scrip] [Quantity] @ [Price]” - trade execution.
  • “Loan repayment: [Amount]” - the borrowed portion repaid.
  • “Net proceeds: [Amount]” - user’s share after repayment.

Where to view

Console > Reports > Ledger:

  • Date-filtered view of all transactions.
  • Filter by MTF type for clarity.
  • Exportable as XLS / CSV.

Reconciliation

To reconcile MTF activity:

  1. Sum buy + interest + repayment.
  2. Compare with sell proceeds.
  3. The difference = realised P&L (gross of taxes).

For tax reporting:

  • Capital gain / loss on the equity portion (CGT applies).
  • Interest paid (may be deductible against gains; CA advice needed).
  • Other charges (typically not separately deductible).

For complex tax situations involving MTF positions, consult a Chartered Accountant before filing.
