Navneet Munot is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC Asset Management Company Limited, one of India’s two largest mutual fund houses by assets under management, a position he has held since February 2021. He succeeded Milind Barve, who led HDFC AMC for many years. Before joining HDFC AMC, Munot served for over a decade as Chief Investment Officer at SBI Funds Management Private Limited (SBI Mutual Fund), which he joined in 2008 and where he oversaw one of the most sustained periods of growth in SBI AMC’s history. He is regarded as one of India’s most accomplished fixed income investors, though his responsibilities span the full spectrum of equity, debt, and hybrid asset management at HDFC AMC.

Early life and education

Navneet Munot completed his chartered accountancy qualification (CA) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and is a CFA charterholder. He also holds a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation, one of the few Indian AMC leaders with this qualification, reflecting his deep engagement with risk management frameworks. He is based in Mumbai.

Career history

Early career

Munot began his career in finance in the early 1990s in India, gaining experience in fixed income analysis, credit research, and portfolio management at various financial institutions. His early career exposure to debt markets proved foundational for his subsequent long tenure managing fixed income and balanced assets at SBI Funds Management.

SBI Funds Management (2008–2021)

Munot joined SBI Funds Management as Chief Investment Officer in 2008, at the onset of the global financial crisis. Over the subsequent 13 years, he oversaw a dramatic expansion of SBI Mutual Fund’s AUM, from a position as a mid-tier fund house to one of the top three in India by AUM. Under his investment oversight, SBI Mutual Fund built a diversified product range and the equity and debt schemes under his team’s management delivered competitive long-term returns.

SBI Mutual Fund’s equity franchise, including SBI Blue Chip Fund and SBI Magnum Multicap Fund, developed strong track records during Munot’s CIO tenure. The AMC’s fixed income franchise, reflecting his own expertise, was also regarded as well-managed.

Munot was known at SBI Funds Management for a macroeconomic and top-down investment overlay combined with rigorous credit analysis in the fixed income domain. He was a regular and articulate media commentator during his SBI tenure.

HDFC AMC (2021–present)

Munot was appointed MD and CEO of HDFC AMC in February 2021 following Milind Barve’s retirement. The appointment came at a period when HDFC AMC’s equity schemes had experienced a significant underperformance phase relative to benchmarks and peers, an issue closely associated with Prashant Jain’s value-oriented positioning. Munot’s mandate involved stabilising and growing the business after this challenging period.

Under Munot’s leadership, HDFC AMC has rebuilt its equity franchise following Prashant Jain’s departure in 2022. The AMC has continued to be one of the two largest in India by AUM and has maintained strong fixed income and hybrid fund franchises.

Investment philosophy

Munot’s investment philosophy blends macro-aware asset allocation with a quality-oriented equity approach and rigorous credit discipline in fixed income. He has emphasised the importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in investment analysis, and has been one of the more publicly engaged Indian AMC leaders on ESG themes. He has also spoken on the importance of global macro awareness, particularly the impact of US Federal Reserve policy, energy prices, and emerging market capital flows, on Indian market dynamics.

Public engagement

Munot is a regular contributor to Indian financial media and has been an active member of CFA Institute advisory committees. He writes regularly for financial publications and is a sought-after speaker at investment conferences. He has contributed to CFA Institute publications on fixed income and portfolio management.
