Note: Nimesh Shah (ICICI Prudential AMC) is a different individual from Nilesh Shah (Kotak Mahindra AMC). The two share the same family name and comparable seniority in the industry but have distinct careers and organisations.
Early life and education
Nimesh Shah holds a chartered accountancy qualification (CA) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and has financial management credentials. He is based in Mumbai.
Career history
Early career
Shah began his career in Indian financial services, gaining experience in accountancy, financial management, and investment operations. His career path took him through roles in the financial services sector before his association with the ICICI Group.
ICICI Prudential AMC (2009–present)
Shah was appointed MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential AMC in 2009 and has led the organisation continuously since then. ICICI Prudential AMC has been either the largest or second-largest Indian mutual fund by AUM through most of this period, managing a comprehensive range of equity, debt, hybrid, and passive schemes.
Under Shah’s leadership, ICICI Prudential AMC has maintained a strong investment management platform led by Sankaran Naren as CIO for equities and a deep fixed income team. The AMC’s flagship equity schemes, ICICI Prudential Balanced Advantage Fund (one of India’s largest single mutual fund schemes), ICICI Prudential Value Discovery Fund, ICICI Prudential Bluechip Fund, and a range of sector and thematic funds, have collectively managed assets in the tens of thousands of crores.
Shah has overseen ICICI Prudential AMC’s expansion in the passive and ETF space, making it one of the leading ETF providers in India alongside Nippon India and SBI AMC. The AMC has also built one of the most comprehensive fixed income scheme ranges in the Indian market.
ICICI Prudential AMC listed on the stock exchanges in 2017 through an IPO, making Shah a publicly accountable listed company CEO in addition to his role as fund house leader. The IPO was one of the most watched in the Indian financial services sector and established a market-based valuation for the AMC business.
Leadership approach
Shah’s public commentary as CEO reflects the scale and institutional character of ICICI Prudential AMC’s position in the market. He engages regularly with regulatory discussions, AMFI policy processes, and media commentary on the mutual fund industry’s development. His management approach has emphasised investment process rigour, product breadth, and risk management discipline as the foundations of ICICI Prudential AMC’s competitive position.
He has engaged with issues of credit quality in debt funds, particularly following the IL&FS and DHFL episodes of 2018-2019, and has been a voice for regulatory strengthening of credit quality standards in the debt mutual fund universe.
Public engagement
Shah is a regular participant in AMFI forums and Indian financial media, contributing to Mint, Economic Times, Business Standard, and television appearances. He has been involved in SEBI’s consultative processes on mutual fund regulation.
