Quant Mutual Fund
Quant Mutual Fund is an Indian asset management company, formally incorporated as Quant Money Managers Limited, and one of the fastest-growing AMCs in India during the 2020–2024 period. The fund house is sponsored and controlled by Sandeep Tandon, its founder, promoter, and Managing Director. As of March 2024, Quant MF managed assets exceeding Rs 90,000 crore, having grown from under Rs 1,000 crore in 2020, an AUM increase exceeding 90 times in approximately four years.
Quant Mutual Fund operates under a distinctive quantitative investment philosophy branded as VLRT (Valuation, Liquidity, Risk Appetite, and Time). The fund house claims that its investment and rebalancing decisions are driven by this proprietary analytical framework rather than conventional discretionary fundamental analysis, differentiating it from the majority of Indian AMCs.
In June 2024, SEBI conducted searches at the offices of Quant Money Managers Limited in connection with an alleged front-running investigation. The investigation was ongoing as of mid-2024 and had not resulted in confirmed adjudicatory orders at the time of writing.
History and corporate structure
Origins and relaunch
Quant Money Managers Limited has a long corporate history predating Sandeep Tandon’s involvement; the entity had previously been associated with different sponsors under different names. Sandeep Tandon’s group acquired control of the entity and reregistered it with SEBI as a mutual fund, relaunching the fund house with the “Quant” brand identity.
The current scheme roster was substantially built from 2018–2019 onward, with Tandon’s investment philosophy and the VLRT quantitative model applied across equity, debt, and hybrid categories.
AUM growth (2020–2024)
From approximately Rs 800–1,000 crore in early 2020, Quant MF’s AUM grew explosively through the 2020–2024 period, driven by:
- Strong equity scheme returns during the broad market rally of 2020–2022, particularly in the small and mid cap categories.
- Growing social media and online community-driven distribution among retail direct plan investors.
- Quant Small Cap Fund, Quant Flexi Cap Fund, and Quant Active Fund achieving high category performance rankings.
- Attention from fintech platforms, YouTube financial educators, and personal finance communities.
SEBI investigation (2024)
In June 2024, SEBI’s officers conducted searches at Quant Money Managers’ offices. Media reports indicated the investigation related to alleged front-running, the practice of trading in personal or connected accounts ahead of scheme trades, using advance knowledge of the scheme’s intended transactions to profit at the scheme’s expense (and investors’ expense).
Quant MF issued statements asserting cooperation with SEBI’s investigation and denial of wrongdoing. The fund house continued normal operations during the investigation, including processing investor transactions. No formal adjudicatory order of prohibition or debarment had been issued against the AMC or its principals as of mid-2024, though the investigation was at a preliminary phase.

- Quant Small Cap Fund: Among the top-returning small cap schemes over the 2020–2024 period; experienced very rapid AUM growth.
- Quant Flexi Cap Fund: Multi-capitalisation mandate.
- Quant Active Fund: Multi-cap mandate.

Investment philosophy: VLRT framework
The VLRT (Valuation, Liquidity, Risk Appetite, Time) framework is Quant MF’s stated investment methodology. Under this framework:
- Valuation: Quantitative assessment of whether the market or specific securities are expensive or cheap relative to historical norms and forecasted fundamentals.
- Liquidity: Analysis of money supply conditions, credit availability, and capital flows as drivers of asset price direction.
- Risk Appetite: Measurement of market participants’ aggregate risk tolerance through price, volatility, and options market signals.
- Time: Identification of cyclical and structural timing for asset class and sector rotation.
The VLRT framework drives active sector rotation and position changes with higher frequency than most fundamentally driven Indian AMCs. Critics and analysts have noted that the framework’s opacity makes it difficult to independently verify whether portfolio changes are truly model-driven or discretionary.
Distribution and operations
Quant MF has grown primarily through digital channels and direct plan investments, with limited traditional bank-branch distribution. The fund house’s growth trajectory and the controversy around the SEBI investigation have both been amplified by social media and online investor communities.
Regulatory standing
Quant Money Managers Limited holds a valid SEBI registration. The June 2024 SEBI searches constitute a significant regulatory event. Prior to 2024, the fund house had not faced material SEBI enforcement actions. Investors considering allocation to Quant MF schemes should monitor SEBI proceedings for any adjudicatory outcomes.
