R. Janakiraman
R. Janakiraman is a senior equity fund manager at Franklin Templeton Asset Management (India) Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Franklin Templeton Investments. He is known as a long-tenured manager of Franklin India Prima Fund, one of India’s more established mid-cap equity funds, and as a contributor to Franklin Templeton India’s equity investment process under the CIO oversight of Anand Radhakrishnan. His career at Franklin Templeton India spans multiple decades, making him one of the longest-serving individual fund managers in the Indian mutual fund industry.
Early life and education
R. Janakiraman holds professional financial qualifications and a management degree. He is based in Chennai, where Franklin Templeton India’s investment management operations are headquartered.
Career history
Janakiraman joined Franklin Templeton Asset Management India in the early stages of its Indian operations and has remained with the organisation through its evolution from a new entrant in the Indian market to a established, if challenged, presence following the 2020 debt fund wind-up episode. His multi-decade tenure at a single AMC is a notable characteristic in an industry where senior fund manager mobility has been high.
Franklin India Prima Fund
Franklin India Prima Fund is among the more historically recognised mid-cap equity mutual funds in India, having operated for many years with a consistent investment mandate focused on mid-cap and smaller companies with strong growth potential. Janakiraman has been the lead manager or co-manager of the fund through an extended period, contributing a depth of knowledge of the Indian mid-cap universe that comes from following companies over cycles.
The fund operates in the mid-cap category following SEBI’s 2017 scheme recategorisation circular, which standardised fund category definitions and mandated that mid-cap funds maintain at least 65 per cent of assets in companies ranked 101 to 250 by market capitalisation.
Post-2020 context
Franklin Templeton India’s debt fund wind-up in April 2020 created a challenging operating environment for the equity division, including for Janakiraman’s management of equity schemes. Despite the reputational pressure on the Franklin Templeton India brand following the debt episode, the equity schemes maintained their investment mandate and operational integrity. The AMC’s equity fund range, including Franklin India Prima Fund, continued to attract investors and deliver competitive returns in subsequent market cycles.
Investment philosophy
Janakiraman’s investment approach for the mid-cap mandate emphasises identifying businesses with large growth runways, capable management teams, and competitive advantages that are not fully priced into current market valuations. His approach combines top-down sectoral views on which industries are experiencing structural tailwinds with bottom-up analysis of individual businesses within those sectors.
He has spoken about the importance of patience in mid-cap investing, where the time between identifying a good business and the market recognising its value can span multiple quarters or years.
Public engagement
Janakiraman contributes to financial media commentary including Mint and Moneycontrol and participates in Franklin Templeton India’s investor communication activities. He has been interviewed on financial television discussing mid-cap market conditions and fund strategy.
