Rukun Tarachandani
Rukun Tarachandani is the Executive Vice President and Fund Manager (Equity) at PPFAS Asset Management Private Limited, the asset management company of PPFAS Mutual Fund. He is a named co-fund manager of the Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund (PPFCF), the AMC’s flagship and India’s largest actively managed equity mutual fund, and of several other active equity and hybrid schemes including the Parag Parikh ELSS Tax Saver Fund, the Parag Parikh Arbitrage Fund, the Parag Parikh Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund and the Parag Parikh Large Cap Fund.
Tarachandani joined PPFAS in March 2021 as Vice President, Research, after eight years of buy-side and sell-side experience at Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research and Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company. He is one of the senior lateral hires of the post-2015 PPFAS team rebuild, with a quantitatively trained, technology-and-finance background that complements the value-investing philosophy of CIO Rajeev Thakkar and Head of Research Raunak Onkar.
Tarachandani’s role within PPFAS is structurally important for several reasons:
- Sectoral research depth: With prior experience covering small and mid-cap Indian equities at Kotak Mahindra AMC and global investment research at Goldman Sachs, Tarachandani contributes a complementary research lens to the PPFAS equity research function.
- Multi-scheme co-fund management: Tarachandani is a named co-fund manager across PPFCF, the ELSS Tax Saver Fund, the Arbitrage Fund, the Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund and the Large Cap Fund.
- CFA and CQF credentials: Tarachandani holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and the Certificate in Quantitative Finance, a comparatively unusual dual-quantitative-finance qualification set in the Indian mutual fund industry.
- Public spokesperson: Tarachandani has been profiled and interviewed by Indian financial press and industry publications, including AlphaStreet’s published interview on his domestic equity fund-management approach at PPFAS.
- Post-cap-freeze era hire: Tarachandani’s March 2021 joining of PPFAS predates the February 2022 SEBI MF overseas investment cap freeze and positioned him to participate in the AMC’s post-freeze domestic-equity allocation strategy as PPFCF’s foreign exposure declined from around 28% to 11 to 16% of AUM.

Education and qualifications
Rukun Tarachandani holds the following educational and professional qualifications, as disclosed on the PPFAS AMC fund-manager profiles page and in scheme information documents:
- Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Information Technology: A four-year undergraduate engineering degree in information technology. The B.Tech IT curriculum typically covers computer science fundamentals (programming, algorithms, data structures), software engineering, computer networks, database systems and information systems, providing the technical-analytical foundation for the quantitative-finance work that Tarachandani subsequently pursued.
- Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) in Finance: A two-year postgraduate management degree with a finance specialisation, covering corporate finance, security analysis, portfolio management, financial modelling, and the macroeconomic and regulatory framework for capital markets.
- CFA Charterholder: Chartered Financial Analyst designation conferred by the CFA Institute (USA), requiring passing of three sequential examinations (Levels I, II and III) covering ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial reporting and analysis, corporate finance, equity, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments, and portfolio management.
- Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF): A part-time postgraduate qualification by Fitch Learning and CQF Institute, covering financial mathematics, derivatives modelling, computational finance, risk management and machine learning for finance.
The combination of B.Tech (IT), PGPM (Finance), CFA charter and CQF is a comparatively distinctive credential set among Indian fund managers. The B.Tech IT and CQF combination places Tarachandani among the more quantitatively trained members of the PPFAS investment team, while the CFA charter supplements with explicit fundamental-investment-analysis training. The PGPM in Finance provides the business-school grounding in corporate finance and capital-markets practice.
Career timeline
2013: Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research
In 2013, Tarachandani began his career at Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research. Goldman Sachs’s Global Investment Research division produces fundamental, top-down and quantitative research for the bank’s institutional client base across asset classes and geographies. Tarachandani’s tenure at Goldman Sachs provided exposure to sell-side analytical practices, large-team research workflows, fundamental and quantitative cross-discipline modelling, and the operational rigour of a major global investment bank’s research function.
Mid-career: Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company
After Goldman Sachs, Tarachandani moved to Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company, the AMC of Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund (one of India’s leading mutual fund houses). At Kotak Mahindra AMC, Tarachandani covered small and midcap equities as part of the research team. The small and mid-cap research stint provided direct exposure to:
- Bottom-up underwriting of less-covered Indian equities.
- Management interactions and field-research practices in the mid-market segment.
- Buy-side portfolio-construction discussions across the small-cap and mid-cap mutual fund schemes managed by Kotak.
- The operational realities of Indian mutual fund research disclosure, factsheet practices and SEBI compliance.
The Kotak Mahindra AMC stint is structurally important to Tarachandani’s PPFAS profile because PPFCF’s portfolio construction has historically combined large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap holdings under the flexi-cap mutual fund mandate (since 13 January 2021). The small and mid-cap research depth he brought from Kotak supplements the historical PPFAS research strengths in large-cap Indian equities and international developed-market technology equities.
March 2021: Joining PPFAS as Vice President, Research
In March 2021, Tarachandani joined PPFAS Asset Management Private Limited as Vice President, Research. The joining date is significant for two reasons:
- It came shortly after the 13 January 2021 migration of the AMC’s flagship from the multi-cap category (as Parag Parikh Long Term Equity Fund) to the new Flexi Cap category (as Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund) introduced by SEBI in November 2020. The Flexi Cap migration created an enlarged formal mandate for active allocation across market caps, increasing the demand for cross-cap research depth that Tarachandani’s small-and-midcap background addressed.
- It came almost exactly one year before the 2 February 2022 suspension of PPFCF lump-sum and fresh SIP / STP registrations following the industry-wide breach of the USD 7 billion overseas-investment cap. Tarachandani’s research support in the early post-cap-freeze period coincided with the operational re-anchoring of PPFCF towards domestic equity exposure.
2021 to 2023: Promotion to Fund Manager (Equity)
Within approximately two years of joining, Tarachandani was promoted from Vice President, Research to Fund Manager (Equity) and subsequently to Executive Vice President. The promotion progression reflects PPFAS’s preference for internal promotion of senior research hires to fund-management designations after operational induction.
27 October 2023: Co-Fund Manager at Arbitrage Fund launch
On 27 October 2023, after a 23 to 27 October 2023 NFO, PPFAS launched the Parag Parikh Arbitrage Fund, benchmarked to the Nifty 50 Arbitrage Index TRI. The launch fund-management roster included Rajeev Thakkar, Raunak Onkar, Raj Mehta and Rukun Tarachandani. The Arbitrage Fund’s mandate involves cash-futures basis trades, a quantitatively oriented strategy where Tarachandani’s CQF training is directly applicable. See the arbitrage mutual fund in India entry for category overview.
22 February 2024: Co-Fund Manager at PPDAAF launch
On 22 February 2024, after a 20 to 22 February 2024 NFO, PPFAS launched the Parag Parikh Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund (PPDAAF), benchmarked to the CRISIL Hybrid 50+50 Moderate Index. Tarachandani was named as a co-fund manager alongside Rajeev Thakkar, Raunak Onkar, Raj Mehta and Mansi Kariya.
4 February 2026: Co-Fund Manager at Large Cap Fund launch
On 4 February 2026, after a 19 to 30 January 2026 NFO, PPFAS launched the Parag Parikh Large Cap Fund (PPLCF), benchmarked to the Nifty 100 TRI with active fund management and Smart Execution Strategies. Tarachandani was named on the fund-management roster alongside Rajeev Thakkar, Raunak Onkar, Raj Mehta, Tejas Soman and Aishwarya Dhar.
Current title: Executive Vice President and Fund Manager (Equity)
As of May 2026, Tarachandani holds the current title of Executive Vice President and Fund Manager (Equity) at PPFAS AMC. The EVP designation places him among the most senior investment-team members at the AMC.
Role at PPFAS Mutual Fund
Rukun Tarachandani’s role within PPFAS has multiple operational components:
Equity research and co-fund management
As Fund Manager (Equity), Tarachandani participates in equity research, portfolio construction and stock-selection decisions across the AMC’s actively managed equity schemes. His sector and theme coverage is the small and mid-cap segment of the Indian equity market, complementing the historical PPFAS research strengths in large-cap Indian equities (covered by Rajeev Thakkar) and technology, pharma and media (covered by Raunak Onkar).
Quantitative-finance contribution
Tarachandani’s CQF credentials and the underlying quantitative finance training position him to contribute on:
- Arbitrage Fund strategy implementation: Cash-futures basis trades, calendar spreads and other arbitrage strategies that combine fundamental and technical inputs.
- Smart Execution Strategies for the Large Cap Fund: PPFAS has publicly described “Smart Execution Strategies” as a feature of the Parag Parikh Large Cap Fund, indicating an active execution overlay on the Nifty 100-tracking core mandate.
- Risk management and portfolio analytics: Application of quantitative-finance techniques to portfolio risk, factor exposure and execution efficiency.
Multi-scheme co-fund management
Tarachandani is a named co-fund manager across PPFCF, the ELSS Tax Saver Fund, the Arbitrage Fund, the Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund and the Large Cap Fund. This is reflective of the PPFAS preference for shared, named fund-management responsibility across team members.
Communications and investor education
Tarachandani has been profiled in trade publications (notably AlphaStreet India’s interview on his domestic equity fund-management approach at PPFAS) and contributes to the AMC’s investor-communication function through factsheets, the Annual Unitholders’ Meet, the Financial Opportunities Forum educational platform and other AMC channels.
Investment approach and equity strategy
Rukun Tarachandani’s equity-management approach at PPFAS reflects the broader AMC philosophy adapted to his specific small-and-midcap research background:
Cross-cap research depth
PPFCF’s flexi-cap mutual fund mandate permits investment across market-capitalisation buckets without a fixed cap-mix requirement. Tarachandani’s small-and-midcap research depth supplements the AMC’s historical large-cap focus, enabling cross-cap stock-selection within a single portfolio.
Quantitative overlays
Tarachandani’s CQF training supports use of quantitative overlays on the fundamentally driven core portfolio. While PPFAS’s core philosophy remains fundamental and value-investing-oriented, the AMC has deployed quantitative tools in:
- Arbitrage strategy implementation in the Parag Parikh Arbitrage Fund.
- Smart Execution Strategies in the Parag Parikh Large Cap Fund.
- Risk and factor analytics across the broader portfolio.
Bottom-up, value-investing core
Across his coverage, Tarachandani applies the PPFAS investment doctrines summarised on the AMC’s Investment Process page:
- Focused portfolio construction (25 to 35 stocks for PPFCF).
- Margin of safety: buy at valuations that allow for adverse outcomes.
- Tax-aware low-turnover management to defer LTCG under Section 112A and minimise STCG under Section 111A. See also capital gains tax in India.
- No directional derivatives in equity funds (used only in the Arbitrage Fund and for hedging where permitted).
- Cash as a tool when valuations are unattractive (PPFCF cash levels reached 18 to 25% during 2026).
Behavioural-finance lens
PPFAS’s broader philosophy is heavily influenced by behavioural finance (Daniel Kahneman, Robert Shiller and PPFAS founder Parag Parikh’s 2009 book “Value Investing and Behavioral Finance”). Tarachandani’s quantitative training complements this lens by providing systematic frameworks to identify behavioural mispricings.
Public engagement
AlphaStreet interview
AlphaStreet India published an interview with Tarachandani titled “Interview with Rukun Tarachandani, Domestic Equity Fund Manager, PPFAS Mutual Fund”, in which he discussed his domestic-equity fund-management approach, the PPFAS investment philosophy and the implications of the post-2022 overseas-cap-freeze era for the AMC’s allocation strategy.
Annual Unitholders’ Meet
Tarachandani has appeared on the panel at the AMC’s Annual Unitholders’ Meet, the Berkshire-style annual open meeting held since the AMC’s inception. The 12th edition was held on 22 November 2025 at Birla Matushree Sabhaghar, Marine Lines, Mumbai at 4 PM IST, live-streamed on YouTube.
Monthly factsheets
Tarachandani’s research and fund-management inputs are reflected in the monthly factsheet’s portfolio decisions. The PPFAS monthly factsheet is published at https://amc.ppfas.com/downloads/factsheet/ and adheres to the AMFI factsheet template guidance and SEBI disclosure norms.
Financial Opportunities Forum
Tarachandani contributes to the Financial Opportunities Forum (FoF) educational platform at https://ppfasfof.com/, which hosts presentations and analyses by PPFAS team members.
Comparison with industry peers
Rukun Tarachandani’s profile is comparatively distinctive within the Indian mutual fund industry for several reasons:
- Triple-discipline credential set: The combination of B.Tech (IT), PGPM (Finance), CFA charter and CQF is unusual; most Indian fund managers hold a single primary post-graduate qualification supplemented by the CFA charter, without the additional quantitative-finance credential.
- Combined buy-side and sell-side experience: Tarachandani’s Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research start followed by Kotak Mahindra AMC buy-side experience is a relatively well-rounded sequence by Indian standards, where most fund managers spend their career either on the sell side or on the buy side, but not both substantively.
- Quantitative-plus-fundamental fund-management mandate: The combination of fundamental equity fund-management responsibilities with quantitative overlays for arbitrage and execution strategies is uncommon; many AMCs separate the quantitative-strategy function from the active equity research function.
- Senior lateral hire into a culturally distinct AMC: Tarachandani’s March 2021 lateral hire from Kotak Mahindra AMC into PPFAS, with its specific value-investing-plus-behavioural-finance culture, is a successful example of a credentialed mid-career hire being integrated and elevated to fund-management designation within roughly two years of joining.
Operational and distribution context
PPFAS Mutual Fund uses CAMS as its registrar and transfer agent, Deutsche Bank AG Mumbai branch as its custodian, and M/s. M. M. Nissim & Co. LLP as its statutory auditor. The AMC’s in-house investor platform PPFAS SelfInvest, at https://selfinvest.ppfas.com/, supports direct-plan transactions across the scheme menu. Industry utilities used by PPFAS include the MFU mutual fund utility, MF Central and the CAMS investor portal at CAMS Online, with KFin Technologies used in industry-wide common services.
Mutual fund net asset values are computed under the mutual fund NAV computation framework and the applicable NAV rules under SEBI regulations. Distribution between regular and direct plans operates under the broader direct plan adoption in India trend, with the mutual fund trail commission structure applying to regular-plan investments.
Related schemes and AMC context
Rukun Tarachandani’s fund-management mandate sits within the broader PPFAS scheme menu of seven active schemes as of May 2026:

Tarachandani is a named co-fund manager across PPFCF, the ELSS Tax Saver Fund, the Arbitrage Fund, the Dynamic Asset Allocation Fund and the Large Cap Fund, reflecting his coverage focus on equity and equity-derivatives strategies.
