Samir Arora
Samir Arora is the founder and chief investment officer of Helios Capital Management Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based hedge fund that invests primarily in Indian equities. He is one of India’s most recognised foreign-domiciled India-focused fund managers and a highly active social media commentator on Indian equity markets. Before founding Helios, he served as Managing Director and Head of Equities for India and South Asia at Alliance Capital Management (later AllianceBernstein), managing large foreign institutional investor (FII) positions in Indian equities.
Early life and education
Samir Arora completed his undergraduate engineering education in India and subsequently earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the world’s leading business schools. His Wharton MBA was in the tradition of Wharton’s strong finance-oriented curriculum, providing a foundation for his subsequent career in institutional equity management.
Career history
Alliance Capital Management India
Arora joined Alliance Capital Management in India and rose to become Head of Equities for India and South Asia, managing multi-billion-dollar FII equity portfolios. His tenure at Alliance Capital established him as one of the most prominent India-focused institutional equity investors in the early 2000s, a period when FII flows were becoming an increasingly dominant factor in Indian market dynamics.
His departure from Alliance Capital in 2003 was preceded by a regulatory inquiry from SEBI, which alleged certain trading irregularities. The SEBI proceedings generated significant controversy and media coverage. Arora disputed the allegations and successfully challenged certain SEBI orders through the appellate process. The episode is part of his documented career history and has been widely reported in Indian financial media.
Founding of Helios Capital Management
Following his departure from Alliance Capital, Arora established Helios Capital Management in Singapore in 2005, through which he has managed an India-focused long/short equity fund. Helios has operated as a hedge fund for sophisticated institutional and high-net-worth investors, employing a long-biased India equity strategy with selective short positions.
The fund has delivered competitive long-term returns and Arora has built a substantial following in Indian investment circles, partly through his prolific social media activity on Twitter/X and other platforms, where he shares market views, sector analysis, and commentary on corporate governance, regulatory policy, and investor behaviour.
Helios Mutual Fund (India)
More recently, Helios Capital Management obtained SEBI approval to operate as a mutual fund in India, with the launch of Helios Mutual Fund. This represents an extension of Arora’s India investing franchise from the offshore hedge fund format to the domestic mutual fund market.
Investment philosophy
Arora’s investment approach is growth-oriented, focusing on identifying Indian businesses with large addressable market opportunities, strong management execution capability, and potential for sustained earnings compounding. He has been a consistent long-term bull on structural growth themes in India, consumer, financial services, technology, while also being willing to take tactical short-term views on market conditions.
His social media commentary is characterised by directness and a willingness to engage with opposing views, making him one of the more interactive senior fund managers in the Indian investment community.
Public engagement
Arora is among the most active senior Indian fund managers on social media, particularly Twitter/X, where his commentary on markets, corporate governance, and investment philosophy reaches a large audience. He contributes commentary to Indian financial media including Moneycontrol and BQ Prime. He has been a guest on financial podcasts and investment conferences.
