Sandeep Tandon is the founder, Managing Director, and Chief Investment Officer of Quant Mutual Fund, formerly known as Escorts Mutual Fund, a SEBI-registered mutual fund house headquartered in Mumbai. He is one of the most distinctive figures in Indian asset management, having pioneered a proprietary quantitative and predictive analytics framework, referred to internally as the VLRT (Valuation, Liquidity, Risk Appetite, and Time) framework, as the primary basis for investment decisions across Quant Mutual Fund’s equity, debt, and hybrid schemes. Quant Mutual Fund transformed from a small, relatively obscure fund house into one of the fastest-growing AMCs in India by AUM during the 2020–2024 period, largely on the back of strong performance across its equity schemes.

Early life and education

Sandeep Tandon’s early educational and professional background is in technology and quantitative analysis. He completed his engineering education in India before transitioning to financial markets and investment management. His technology background is a defining characteristic of his approach to markets, distinguishing him from the fundamental equity analysts and fixed income professionals who constitute most of his peer group among Indian AMC leaders.

Career history

Early career and founding philosophy

Prior to his current role, Tandon worked in technology and financial data analysis, developing expertise in pattern recognition, quantitative modelling, and predictive analytics as applied to financial markets. He describes his journey into asset management as driven by the conviction that markets are more predictable than conventional wisdom suggests when analysed through the right quantitative and behavioural lenses.

Acquisition of Escorts Mutual Fund

Sandeep Tandon acquired Escorts Mutual Fund, a small, legacy AMC that had been operating at marginal scale for many years, and rebranded it as Quant Mutual Fund. The acquisition and rebranding marked the beginning of a concerted effort to build a quantitative investment franchise within the Indian mutual fund industry. The early years of Quant Mutual Fund under Tandon’s leadership involved a thorough restructuring of the investment process, the recruitment of quantitative analysts, and the development of the proprietary VLRT framework.

Quant Mutual Fund growth phase (2019–2024)

The period 2019-2024 saw Quant Mutual Fund’s AUM grow dramatically from a very small base (below Rs 1,000 crore) to over Rs 85,000 crore at peak, driven primarily by strong performance across its equity schemes, particularly Quant Small Cap Fund, Quant Mid Cap Fund, and Quant Active Fund, during the 2020-2023 bull market in Indian equities. The performance track record attracted significant attention from retail investors, financial advisors, and financial media, and Quant Mutual Fund became one of the most discussed fund houses in Indian personal finance communities.

In 2024, Quant Mutual Fund came under scrutiny following reports of a SEBI investigation into front-running allegations related to trading activity. The matter received extensive media coverage and led to a period of elevated investor scrutiny of the fund house. Tandon and the firm denied the allegations. The investigation and its outcomes were still being reported on as of the time of writing; investors are advised to consult current regulatory disclosures.

VLRT framework

The VLRT (Valuation, Liquidity, Risk Appetite, Time) framework is Sandeep Tandon’s proprietary multi-factor analytical model for investment decision-making:

Valuation analyses whether an asset is overvalued, fairly valued, or undervalued relative to its intrinsic worth and historical valuation ranges.

Liquidity examines global and domestic money flows, central bank policy, and liquidity conditions in financial markets, on the thesis that liquidity is the primary driver of market direction over medium-term horizons.

Risk Appetite measures prevailing investor sentiment and risk-taking behaviour using a variety of quantitative proxies, seeking to identify when markets are in greed-dominated or fear-dominated regimes.

Time incorporates cycle analysis and temporal patterns, including seasonality, earnings cycles, and longer-term economic cycles, into the timing of investment decisions.

Tandon has discussed the VLRT framework extensively in public interviews and media appearances, presenting it as a distinct departure from both pure discretionary fundamental analysis and simple quantitative momentum strategies.

Public engagement

Sandeep Tandon is an active media commentator and has given numerous long-form interviews to Mint, Economic Times, Moneycontrol, BQ Prime, and financial podcasts. His media appearances are distinguished by his willingness to make specific market calls and sector views based on his framework, which is unusual relative to the more circumspect commentary style of most AMC executives. He has spoken at industry conferences and has been profiled in outlets including Outlook Business.
