Scripbox is an Indian robo-advisory and direct mutual fund investment platform operated by Scripbox Advisors Private Limited, accessible at scripbox.com. Founded in 2012, Scripbox is one of India’s earliest mutual fund robo-advisers and is distinguished by its opinionated, curation-based approach: instead of offering the full universe of mutual fund schemes, Scripbox presents a small, researched selection of recommended funds for each investor goal category, simplifying the decision for investors who prefer guidance over complete open-choice.

Scripbox holds a SEBI registration as an investment adviser (RIA) and an AMFI ARN registration, enabling it to provide fee-based advisory services and facilitate direct plan execution. The company is backed by venture investors including Accel Partners and Nadathur Holdings.

Founding and history

Scripbox was founded in Bengaluru in 2012 by Sanjiv Singhal and Atul Shinghal, a period when SEBI’s direct plan mandate had not yet taken effect (it was announced in October 2012 for January 2013 implementation). The founders built Scripbox’s model on the insight that most retail investors are overwhelmed by the breadth of the Indian mutual fund universe (thousands of schemes across dozens of AMCs) and would benefit from a curated shortlist with a clear rationale for each recommendation.

Initially operating as a regular-plan distributor (the direct plan model was not yet available), Scripbox transitioned to a direct-plan RIA model after SEBI’s January 2013 direct plan mandate. This transition was fundamental to Scripbox’s brand positioning as a conflict-of-interest-free advisory platform.

Curation model

Scripbox’s defining characteristic is its fund curation model. Rather than listing the complete universe of available schemes, Scripbox presents a small number of recommended funds per category:

  • Equity long-term growth: A small selection (typically 3-5 schemes) of equity diversified funds recommended for long-term (7+ years) wealth creation
  • Debt short-term stability: A selection of liquid or short-duration debt funds for short-term goals
  • Tax saving (ELSS): One or two recommended ELSS funds for Section 80C tax saving
  • Retirement: A combination of equity and debt recommended for long-horizon retirement corpus building

The curation is updated periodically based on Scripbox’s proprietary fund evaluation framework, which considers consistency of performance, expense ratios, fund manager track record, and scheme-level risk metrics.

This curation approach is notably different from platforms such as Kuvera and ET Money, which present the full scheme universe and allow investors to select from all available options.

RIA and EOP structure

Scripbox operates under its SEBI RIA registration for the advice and recommendation function (curated fund selection, financial planning) and under the AMFI ARN and EOP framework for direct plan execution. The EOP regulations 2023 formalised the execution-only function that platforms like Scripbox perform.

Target audience

Scripbox’s curation model is particularly well-suited to first-time or time-constrained investors who prefer a “done-for-you” approach to mutual fund selection over a comprehensive self-directed platform experience. The platform’s communication style and user interface are designed for simplicity, with a focus on goal-based investing (retirement, children’s education, emergency fund) rather than scheme-by-scheme portfolio construction.

Market position

Scripbox occupies a niche between fully self-directed direct-plan platforms (Kuvera, ET Money) and full-service wealth managers (INDwealth). Its curation-based model has attracted a loyal user base among urban professionals seeking low-effort, low-conflict direct-plan investing. As of 2024, Scripbox had not disclosed detailed AUM or user figures publicly.
