Bandhan acquisition of IDFC Mutual Fund (2022)

In April 2022, Bandhan Financial Holdings (parent of Bandhan Bank) completed the acquisition of IDFC Asset Management from IDFC Limited, rebranding the AMC to Bandhan Mutual Fund . The deal valued IDFC MF at approximately Rs 4,500 crore and made Bandhan Bank a major participant in the Indian mutual fund industry, complementing its existing microfinance and retail banking operations.

For the Indian mutual fund industry, the Bandhan-IDFC deal was part of the 2022 consolidation wave that saw several mid-tier AMCs change hands.

IDFC Mutual Fund was the asset management subsidiary of IDFC Limited , an Indian infrastructure-finance NBFC turned diversified financial holding company. Operating from the mid-2000s until April 2022, IDFC Asset Management built a top-15 presence in the Indian mutual fund industry with approximately Rs 1,15,000 crore in AUM at time of acquisition. The AMC was acquired by Bandhan Financial Holdings in April 2022 and rebranded as Bandhan Mutual Fund .

For Indian retail investors who held IDFC Mutual Fund scheme units, the entity is now Bandhan Mutual Fund. Folios, units, and schemes continued through the rebrand without disruption.

IDFC Mutual Fund was the Indian asset management subsidiary of IDFC Limited, with operational origins dating to 2000 as Standard Chartered Mutual Fund. After IDFC acquired the AMC in 2008, the AMC operated under the IDFC Mutual Fund brand from 2008 through 2023, when the entire AMC business was sold to a Bandhan Financial Holdings-led consortium. Following the 2023 transaction, the AMC was rebranded as Bandhan Mutual Fund , and the IDFC Mutual Fund brand ceased to exist as a standalone entity.
