The BSDA framework was introduced by SEBI to reduce the cost of holding securities in electronic form for individuals with modest portfolios and to encourage retail participation in the capital markets. The BSDA is governed by SEBI&rsquo;s circular on Basic Services Demat Account, most recently updated by the SEBI circular SEBI/HO/MIRSD/MIRSD-PoD-1/P/CIR/2023/186, dated 28 November 2023, which revised the eligibility thresholds effective 1 January 2024.</p>
