The UTI Mutual Fund direct portal at utimf.com is the AMC-operated investment platform for direct plan investments in schemes managed by UTI Asset Management Company Limited (UTI AMC), one of India’s oldest and largest asset management companies. UTI AMC traces its institutional lineage to the Unit Trust of India, the government-sponsored investment entity established under the Unit Trust of India Act 1963, which dominated Indian mutual fund investing for several decades before deregulation.

UTI AMC is listed on NSE and BSE (NSE: UTIAMC), having completed its IPO in September 2020. The company’s shareholders include four public sector financial institutions – State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, Bank of Baroda, and Punjab National Bank – plus T. Rowe Price (a US-based asset manager), making it a government-connected AMC with a private-sector partner.

Historical context

The original Unit Trust of India (UTI) was India’s first mutual fund organisation, established in 1964. Under UTI Act, it operated outside the SEBI regulatory framework until the UTI Act was amended and UTI was bifurcated in 2002 into UTI-I (holding the specified undertaking with government guarantee for older schemes) and UTI-II (UTI AMC, which became SEBI-registered and operates the current suite of market-rate schemes).

UTI AMC manages equity, debt, liquid, ETF, and hybrid schemes. US64, India’s most widely held mutual fund historically, was administered under the SUUTI (Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India) and is not part of UTI AMC’s SEBI-registered scheme range.
