Vinit Sambre
Vinit Sambre is the Head of Equities and a senior fund manager at DSP Investment Managers Private Limited, the entity operating DSP Mutual Fund. He is best known as the lead fund manager of DSP Small Cap Fund, one of India’s more recognised small-cap mutual fund offerings, which he has managed for over a decade. He has been with DSP for an extended tenure, contributing to the AMC’s equity investment process across small-cap and mid-cap mandates.
Early life and education
Vinit Sambre is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and holds a CFA charter. He pursued his professional qualifications in India. He is based in Mumbai.
Career history
Sambre joined DSP Investment Managers (then DSP Merrill Lynch Mutual Fund, later DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund) in an equity research and fund management capacity, developing deep expertise in the Indian small-cap equity universe. His association with DSP spans the AMC’s successive ownership transitions from DSP Merrill Lynch to DSP BlackRock to DSP (under the DSP Group’s full ownership), providing him with an unusually long view of the Indian small-cap market and the businesses within it.
Management of DSP Small Cap Fund
Sambre’s central role has been as fund manager of DSP Small Cap Fund, a scheme that operates in the highly volatile and research-intensive small-cap category. The fund has been recognised for its research depth and disciplined approach to small-cap valuation. Small-cap funds in India are characterised by the potential for high returns over long periods accompanied by significant volatility and liquidity risk during market downturns; DSP Small Cap Fund’s performance through multiple market cycles under Sambre has been a key driver of the AMC’s equity franchise reputation.
He has also managed or co-managed DSP Mid Cap Fund and other equity schemes within the DSP fund range.
Investment philosophy
Sambre’s investment approach in the small-cap domain is characterised by:
Deep primary research. Given the limited sell-side research coverage of small-cap Indian companies, Sambre has emphasised the importance of proprietary research, company visits, management meetings, supply chain analysis, as the basis for investment decisions.
Focus on business quality. Even within the small-cap universe, Sambre has consistently emphasised seeking businesses with clear competitive advantages, capable and trustworthy managements, and potential for multi-year earnings growth.
Valuation discipline. He has spoken about the importance of not paying excessive valuations even for promising small-cap businesses, given the elevated risk of permanent capital loss when overpaying for uncertain future growth.
Long holding periods. His stated approach involves holding high-conviction small-cap positions for extended periods, typically three to five years or more, to allow business value to emerge and be recognised by the market.
Public engagement
Sambre contributes to DSP’s investor communication content and is a regular participant in AMC investor events. He has given interviews to Mint, Moneycontrol, and financial television discussing small-cap investing philosophy and market conditions.
