Briefcase symbol on Kite

From WebNotes, a public knowledge base. Last updated . Reading time ~3 min.

The briefcase symbol on the Kite marketwatch is a small icon (a stylised briefcase / portfolio glyph) that appears on the right side of a scrip row when the user holds shares of that instrument in their portfolio. It is purely a visual cue, not a clickable target, and is one of the small UX affordances that distinguish a “watched” scrip from a “held” one.

Where it appears

SurfaceWhere the briefcase shows
Kite web marketwatch rowRight of the LTP, before the change column
Kite mobile app marketwatchRight of the row, beside the LTP
Quote screenTop of the scrip detail view (mobile only)

The icon is grey when the user holds the scrip in delivery (CNC) ; it switches to a different shade or carries a small overlay when there is an open intraday position on the same scrip.

When it appears

  • Equity CNC holding: Shares delivered to demat under the CNC product type.
  • Intraday position (MIS): Open intraday position on the scrip. The icon may overlay or change colour to differentiate from CNC holdings.
  • F&O position: Open futures or options position; the icon flags the underlying.
  • Mutual fund holding: Mutual fund schemes do not appear on the Kite marketwatch; the Coin marketwatch has its own holdings indicator.

Why it is useful

The briefcase symbol provides at-a-glance context across the watchlist:

  • Filters mentally. You can spot which watchlist rows you are exposed to and which are pure observation.
  • Reduces accidental duplicates. Without the icon, an active trader might add the same scrip to a watchlist twice, once as a holding tracker and once as a watch candidate.
  • Acts as a quick-jump trigger. Right-clicking the icon on Kite web typically offers a shortcut to the Holdings tab or Positions tab .

Differences from the event tag

The event tag (calendar icon) flags an upcoming corporate action. The briefcase flags an existing holding. The two icons are independent; a scrip can carry both at once (e.g., you hold the stock and a dividend record date is approaching).

P symbol vs briefcase

The P symbol on the holdings page is a different glyph that appears within the Holdings tab itself, marking pledged shares. The briefcase appears on the marketwatch.

When the briefcase disappears unexpectedly

  • Sold the holding. Once the holding goes to zero, the icon disappears.
  • T+1 vs T+2 settlement. On the day you buy CNC, the icon should appear; the actual demat credit happens on T+1. If the icon does not appear on the buy day, log out and log back in to refresh server-side state.
  • Different exchange. If you hold the scrip via NSE but added the BSE row to the marketwatch, the icon may not appear on the BSE row (or may appear, depending on Kite’s matching logic). Behaviour has changed across app versions.
