Stock market holidays are the weekdays on which the National Stock Exchange , BSE and India’s commodity exchanges suspend trading, set each December in an exchange circular for the year ahead. In 2026 the NSE and BSE equity markets close on 16 weekdays, under NSE circular NSE/CMTR/71775 of 12 December 2025 and its amendment NSE/CMTR/72260 of 12 January 2026.

The list differs by segment. Currency derivatives close on 20 weekdays, commodity exchanges keep their evening session open on most holidays, and the clearing corporations stop settlement on four days when equity still trades. This page tracks every list for the current year, by exchange and session.

The status card below reads those lists against the clock in India Standard Time: it shows whether the equity market is open now, counts down to the next equity holiday and exports every holiday as a calendar file. The same lists feed the segment table, the twelve-month calendar and the weekend, special-session and GIFT City panels, and the page moves to the next year’s circulars at the same address when they are issued.

Stock market holidays in 2026

NSE and BSE equity, equity derivatives and securities lending and borrowing close on 16 weekdays in 2026, listed date by date in the full holiday list below. Fifteen were set on 12 December 2025 (NSE/CMTR/71775 and BSE notice 20251212-8); the sixteenth, Thursday 15 January 2026, was added a month later for the Municipal Corporation elections in Maharashtra.

July 2026 has no holiday on NSE, BSE, MCX or NCDEX. February and August have no equity holiday either, because Mahashivratri (15 February) and Independence Day (15 August) fall at the weekend. The last three equity holidays of the year are 10 November, 24 November and 25 December.

Holiday list by segment and exchange

The table lists every weekday on which at least one Indian exchange segment or clearing corporation is closed in 2026, with the status of each. The filters narrow it to equity holidays, to the four dates on which only currency and settlement stop, or to the dates still to come.

NSE and BSE match on every date; the only differences between their circulars are spellings, such as “Gudi Padwa” at NSE and “Gudhipadwa” at BSE. The Metropolitan Stock Exchange publishes the same 15 original equity dates on its holidays page, which does not show 15 January 2026.

Stock market holiday calendar

The calendar marks every 2026 holiday by type. Red dates close the equity market; pink dates close only currency derivatives and settlement; the amber date, 1 January, closes only the commodity evening session; striped dates are holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday; green dates are weekend days with a special trading session.

2026 calendar from NSE/CMTR/71775 (12 December 2025), amended by NSE/CMTR/72260 (12 January 2026); BSE notices 20251212-8 and 20260112-8 and NSE/CD/71962 (23 December 2025), amended by NSE/CD/72233 (9 January 2026); BSE notices 20251223-12 and 20260109-16. Saturdays and Sundays are shaded; tap or hover a marked date for its name.

Commodity sessions on holidays

Commodity derivatives on NSE, BSE and MCX trade in two sessions, a morning session from 09:00 to 17:00 IST and an evening session from 17:00 to 23:30 IST (23:55 when US daylight saving is off), and the 2026 circulars close them separately. Of the 17 weekdays on which commodity trading is curtailed, the evening session stays open on 12.

Both sessions close on four days only: Republic Day (26 January), Good Friday (3 April), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) and Christmas (25 December). New Year Day, 1 January, reverses the pattern: the morning session trades and the evening session is shut. MCX circular MCX/TRD/017/2026 of 12 January 2026 kept the evening session of 15 January open to 23:55 IST, and to 21:00 for selected agricultural commodities.

NCDEX differs. Its circular NCDEX/TRADING-040/2025 of 16 December 2025 closes both its morning session (10:00 to 17:00) and evening session (17:00 to 21:00) on every 2026 weekday holiday except 1 January, when the morning session trades, and NCDEX/TRADING-001/2026 shut it outright on 15 January.

Electronic gold receipts (EGR ), which began trading on NSE on 18 May 2026, follow the commodity pattern rather than the equity one. NSE circular NSE/EGR/74203 of 13 May 2026 closes the EGR morning session on the eight weekday holidays from 28 May onward and keeps the evening session open on all of them except Gandhi Jayanti and Christmas.

MCX’s clearing corporation keeps a separate list. MCXCCL circular MCX/MCXCCL/654/2025 of 22 December 2025 names 19 settlement holidays: the 15 MCX weekday holidays other than 1 January, plus 19 February, 19 March, 1 April and 26 August. It moves obligations falling due on those days to the next banking day.

Currency and settlement holidays

Currency derivatives close on four days in 2026 when equity trades: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti (19 February), Gudi Padwa (19 March), the annual bank closing (1 April) and Id-E-Milad (26 August), all in NSE/CD/71962 of 23 December 2025.

The same four days are settlement holidays. NSE Clearing circular NCL/CMPT/71904 of 22 December 2025, and its F&O, currency and debt counterparts of the same date, list 19 settlement holidays, 20 after 15 January was added. On those four days the equity market trades but no funds or securities move, so obligations that fall due wait for the next settlement day. The mechanics of a settlement holiday and its effect on trades under T+1 settlement are set out separately.

Holidays on a weekend

Four 2026 holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, and the NSE, BSE, MCX and NCDEX circulars list them separately because they cost no trading day.

  • SundayMahashivratri
  • SaturdayId-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan Eid)
  • SaturdayIndependence DayCurrency lists add Parsi New Year
  • SundayDiwali Laxmi PujanMuhurat trading session, 14:20 to 15:30 ISTLive schedule

In 2025, by contrast, Independence Day fell on a Friday and closed the market (NSE/CMTR/65587). The weekend list matters for the year count: 20 holidays are named in the 2026 equity circulars, but only 16 close the market.

Special weekend sessions

The exchanges scheduled two weekend sessions in 2026, each by a separate circular issued weeks ahead.

  • SundayUnion BudgetEquity and F&O 09:15 to 15:30 IST (pre-open 09:00 to 09:08); commodity morning session only, 09:00 to 17:00 IST on NSE, BSE and MCX and 10:00 to 17:00 on NCDEX; trades settled on Monday 2 February. NSE/CMTR/72349, NSE/FAOP/72352 and NSE/COM/72351; BSE notices 20260116-33 to 35; MCX/TRD/027/2026; NCDEX/TRADING-004/2026, all of 16 January 2026.
  • SundayMuhurat tradingEquity normal market 14:20 to 15:30 IST; F&O to 15:40 IST. NSE/CMTR/76941, NSE/FAOP/76940 and BSE notice 20261019-9, 19 October 2026.Live schedule

The Budget session on Sunday 1 February 2026 ran full equity hours under NSE/CMTR/72349 of 16 January 2026, which also ruled out a T+0 session that day because 1 February was a settlement holiday; NSE Clearing settled the day’s trades on Monday 2 February (NCL/CMPT/72384 of 19 January 2026). The commodity exchanges ran a morning session only, and NSE International Exchange opened index futures from 09:15 to 15:30 IST the same day (NSEIFSC/TRADE/2455 of 19 January 2026). The Muhurat trading session on Diwali is tracked live on the Muhurat trading time page.

The 15 January 2026 closure

Thursday 15 January 2026 was the only 2026 holiday added after the annual lists, and the exchanges closed it in two steps. On 9 January NSE Clearing made it a settlement holiday (NCL/CMPT/72224) and NSE closed currency derivatives (NSE/CD/72233). On 12 January NSE closed equity and F&O (NSE/CMTR/72260 and NSE/FAOP/72262), NSE Clearing withdrew its earlier circular and revised the January settlement calendar (NCL/CMPT/72278), and BSE followed with notice 20260112-8.

BSE moved equity derivatives contracts due to expire on 15 January to 14 January, and ICCL notice 20260112-46 settled 14 January trades on 16 January. On NSE, BSE and MCX the commodity morning session closed and the evening session traded, the pattern the annual lists use for most holidays; NCDEX closed for the whole day (NCDEX/TRADING-001/2026).

GIFT City exchange holidays

The two exchanges in the GIFT City International Financial Services Centre keep a much shorter holiday list than NSE and BSE and are regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority .

Holidays in 2025

NSE and BSE closed equity on 14 weekdays in 2025, two fewer than in 2026, under NSE/CMTR/65587 of 13 December 2024.

How the holiday list is issued

Each exchange sets its holidays for the coming calendar year in a circular issued under its bye-laws, one per segment, and amends it during the year by a further circular when a closure is added. NSE’s equity list for 2026 is issued under clause 2 of Chapter IX of its bye-laws and Regulation 2.3.1 of its capital market regulations.

Frequently asked questions

Is the stock market open today?
NSE and BSE equity trades from 09:15 to 15:30 IST, Monday to Friday, on every day that is not in the exchange holiday list; in 2026 that list is NSE/CMTR/71775 of 12 December 2025 with NSE/CMTR/72260 of 12 January 2026. A weekend day trades only when a circular opens a special session.
How many stock market holidays are there in 2026?
NSE and BSE equity markets close on 16 weekdays in 2026: 15 in NSE circular NSE/CMTR/71775 of 12 December 2025, plus Thursday 15 January added by NSE/CMTR/72260. Four more holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, when the market is shut anyway.
What are the last stock market holidays of 2026?
The final three NSE and BSE equity holidays of 2026 are Tuesday 10 November (Diwali Balipratipada), Tuesday 24 November (Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev) and Friday 25 December (Christmas), per NSE/CMTR/71775 of 12 December 2025. No equity holiday falls in the rest of December.
Are NSE and BSE holidays the same?
Yes, by date. BSE notice 20251212-8 of 12 December 2025 lists the same equity holidays as NSE/CMTR/71775, and both added 15 January 2026. BSE and NSE also match on currency and commodity dates; only some holiday names are spelt differently.
Is MCX open on stock market holidays?
Usually in the evening. MCX circular MCX/TRD/636/2025 keeps the evening session, from 17:00 IST, open on most 2026 holidays and closes it fully only on Republic Day, Good Friday, Gandhi Jayanti and Christmas. On 1 January MCX opens in the morning and shuts in the evening.
Does NCDEX trade on holidays?
No, apart from one partial day. NCDEX circular NCDEX/TRADING-040/2025 closes both the morning and evening sessions on every 2026 weekday holiday except New Year Day, 1 January, when the morning session trades and the evening session is closed.
Why is the currency market closed when the stock market is open?
The currency holiday list is longer than the equity list. In 2026 NSE circular NSE/CD/71962 of 23 December 2025 closes the currency segment on four days when equity trades: 19 February, 19 March, 1 April (annual bank closing) and 26 August.
What is a settlement holiday?
A settlement holiday is a day on which the clearing corporation does no pay-in or pay-out, even if the exchange trades. NSE Clearing circulars NCL/CMPT/71904 and NCL/CMPT/72278 list 20 such weekdays in 2026, including four when equity trading continues: 19 February, 19 March, 1 April and 26 August.

Yes. NSE/CMTR/72260 and BSE notice 20260112-8, both of 12 January 2026, closed equity and derivatives on Thursday 15 January for the Municipal Corporation elections in Maharashtra. The NSE, BSE and MCX commodity morning session closed and the evening session traded from 17:00 IST; NCDEX closed fully.

Is the stock market open on Saturday and Sunday?
No. NSE and BSE trade Monday to Friday. A weekend session happens only when an exchange circular opens one, as for the Union Budget on Sunday 1 February 2026 and Muhurat trading on Sunday 8 November 2026.
Does GIFT Nifty trade on Indian market holidays?
Mostly yes. NSE International Exchange in GIFT City has two weekday holidays in 2026, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti, under NSEIFSC/TRADE/2417 of 12 December 2025. It trades on most days when NSE and BSE are shut.
What happened to F&O expiry on the 15 January 2026 holiday?
It moved a day earlier. When Thursday 15 January 2026 became a holiday, BSE notice 20260112-8 of 12 January 2026 preponed the equity derivatives contracts due to expire that day to Wednesday 14 January 2026.
When will the 2027 stock market holiday list be released?
